Solar Misconceptions

Do you know the facts about solar? There is a lot of information circulating at the moment about solar and facts can easily be lost through misconceptions. As with any expenditure it is very important to do your research. Here are some common misunderstandings:

1. Solar will get cheaper, so I should wait to purchase it.

This is true to an extent. Currently the Australian dollar is strong, which gives solar companies more purchasing power and they are able to pass this saving on to the customer. However, consumers should be aware that the Federal Government’s Solar Credit Scheme changes annually and affects the amount of discount you receive when purchasing a Solar Photovoltaic (PV) System

Basically this means that depending on your installation date you will not be entitled to as many Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) when you purchase a system if you wait. STCs are a Federal Government discount on the purchase of your system and the quantity of STCs is dependent on the size of your desired system. Some companies buy these directly from you and give you an upfront discount on your system.  For more information on STCs visit www.orer.gov.au/Solar-Panels/Solar-Credits/Solar-Credits.

2. Solar is too expensive.

Solar is viewed as an expensive purchase, however the price of electricity is increasing. According to the Australian Energy Market Commission, Possible Future Retail Electricity Price Movements 1 July 2011 to 30 June 2014*, we can expect a 41.5% increase in electricity prices by 2014. 9.3% of this increase will be the effect of carbon tax.

A PV System allows owners to offset electricity price increases and receive a credit through the Queensland Governments Solar Bonus Scheme.  The Scheme involves a 44-cent tariff paid on surplus electricity exported back to the grid. This scheme helps energy efficient owners decrease their electricity bill and in some cases receive a credit on their bill dependent on the system size and energy usage.

Furthermore, most solar companies offer finance options, or if buying a new home you can have your mortgage broker roll the cost into your mortgage.
