Green Loans Program to be Replaced by Green Start Program - 13th July 2010

The Minister for Climate Change, Energy Efficiency and Water, Senator Penny Wong has announced that the Green Start program will replace the current Green Loans program by January 2011.

The Green Loans program offered financial assistance providing Australians with low interest loans (up to $10,000) for the installation of a renewable energy system.

The Green Start program will be directed at low-income households and disadvantaged Australians and will assist them to become more energy and water efficient and help reduce the effects of climate change.

“The Green Start program will assist those in need to improve the energy efficiency of their home, reduce their carbon footprint and save money on their power bills.” Senator Penny Wong said.

To ease transition between programs, sustainability assessments will continue under the current Green Loans arrangement. Homeowners can still apply for a Home Sustainability Assessment to be conducted by an accredited Home Sustainability Assessor, to determine the sustainability measures required to improve their home’s energy efficiency.

Senator Penny Wong acknowledged problems with the current Green Loans program and said that these issues will be addressed in the development of the Green Start program and finalised details will be released over the next few months.
