Sunshine State Takes the Brunt in Electricity Price Rise - 9th July 2010

The dawn of the new financial year has seen the cost of power rise to record heights with the highest increases occurring in Queensland and parts of New South Wales.  From July 1st 2010, Queensland incurred a 13% increase to the cost of power - the highest of all states.  With the cost of living already a concern for most Australian’s, this price rise will further pressure household and business budgets across the nation.

Electricity price (%) increase for Australian states as at July 1st 2010:

  • Queensand: 13%
  • New South Wales: 7% - 13% (depending on which retailer the customer is with)
  • South Australia: 10%
  • Western Australia: 10%
  • Northern Territory: 5%
  • Tasmania: 6% - 8%

With “The Sunshine State” taking the brunt of the electricity price rise, it’s time for Queenslanders to embrace their title and save money with the installation of a solar powered system for their home or business. Coincidently Queensland averages 8 hours of sunshine per day – the second highest average of all states.  It makes sense for Queenslanders to turn to solar power to not only reduce their cost of living but also help save the environment.

Installing a 1.5kW solar power system can generate enough power to reduce the average homes electricity bill by up to 40%, potentially more with the installation of a larger system.   With the nation wide increases to electricity prices, businesses and homeowners can’t afford not to switch to solar power to save money.

The latest Government Incentive, the Solar Credits Scheme, provides a generous discount off the installation of renewable energy systems, making it affordable for Queenslanders to benefit from solar power. Currently the feed–in tariff is offering 44c a kW hour, for every excess kilowatt exported back to the electricity grid from your solar system. Rewarding households and business owners for the excess electricity produced and further reducing the cost of their power bills.
